Microsoft to upgrade Xbox 360 CPU

September 27th, 2006 betagnome No comments

Microsoft will upgrade the CPU used in its Xbox 360 games console early next year, the CPU’s manufacturer announced today.

The new CPU will be built using technology that can reduce heat and power consumption, as well as potentially increasing speed. It will also help Microsoft cut the console’s cost.

The improved Xbox 360 CPU will be manufactured using 65 nanometre technology starting in the first quarter of 2007, Chartered Semiconductor of Singapore said. The existing CPU uses 90nm technology.

Although the launch of the Xbox 360 last November was generally hailed as a success for Microsoft, the console has been troubled by reports of overheating causing games to crash or freeze.

These have come despite the unit using a pair of powerful fans, together with heat pipes, to carry heat away from the CPU core.

Microsoft acknowledged last year that it had received “isolated” reports of problems. One US buyer has initiated a class action suit against the company, alleging that both the CPU and power supply were prone to overheating.

As is common with advances in chip building methods, the 65nm technology that the new Xbox 360 CPU will use can provide lower power consumption and reduced heat output compared to older production methods.

While the new CPU may help Microsoft alleviate any overheating problems with the existing Xbox 360 design, it is standard industry practice for hardware makers to take advantage of newer semiconductor technology as it becomes available, simply because this helps them reduce manufacturing costs.

September 21, 2006 – After months of system crashes, red lights of death, and screaming owners who just want to play their $60 games, Microsoft today told IGN it’s compensating Xbox 360 owners with broken consoles if they were manufactured before January 1, 2006.

Microsoft said it isolated a pattern of broken systems purchased prior to January 1, 2006. Gamers who bought broken consoles manufactured after January 1, 2006 will not receive free compensation for their consoles.

“As part of our standard and ongoing process of analyzing repair data, we recently noticed a higher than usual number of units coming in for repair,” Microsoft told IGN in a prepared statement today. “Upon further investigation, it was further discovered that the bulk of the units were isolated to a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the console. Returns for repair are coming in for a variety reasons and it’s a higher rate than we are satisfied with.”
Microsoft would not explain the exact issues causing the problems.

IGN spoke with a Microsoft customer service person named Sandy. She explained that Microsoft will either repair the system or, if the problems cannot be fixed within two days, Microsoft will replace the old system with a new one. Anyone with a broken system can call 1-800-4MY-XBOX to speak with a customer service person.

This is an about-face tactic for the console manufacturer. Microsoft repeatedly has said that its return rate was within the 3%-5% window, which is standard with consumer electronics of this type. The company has claimed that any broken systems are flukes or isolated incidents. However, Microsoft admitted that that launch systems manufactured before January 2006 are an issue.

“We’ve made the decision to comp repairs for consoles manufactured before January 1, and provide refunds to the small group of customers who have already paid for repairs,” Microsoft said.
The first gamer to publicly realize this revised policy posted on the Xbox.com forums this morning, claiming that his warranty had been expanded.

“If you’ve got the three red lights of death call Xbox support now. As of tomorrow they are extending the warrantee of all Xboxes manufactured before January 1st to a one year warrantee. I just got off the phone with an agent and set up my repair. Happy birthday this is my present to you!” reads the post.”

Xbox 360 HD DVD playback: Maximum 1080i via component, 1080p VGA-only

September 22nd, 2006 betagnome No comments

We still don’t know the US price or launch date, but we’ve got a bit more specifics on how the Xbox 360 HD DVD player add-on will work when it hits store shelves later this year thanks to a post by Microsoft insider Amir M. on AVS Forum.

When Microsoft revealed yesterday it will support 1080p HD DVD and 1080p DVD upconversion we were surprised because it’s commonly accepted that the CSS (DVD) and AACS (HD DVD & Blu-ray) copyright provisions wouldn’t allow that (although some manufacturers have looked the other way before) via unprotected analog connections. We were right, sort of. Even after the software upgrade this fall, via component cables, the Xbox 360 will still only upconvert DVDs to 480p, and will play HD DVD movies at a maximum resolution of 1080i. To get 1080p output for movies, you must use a VGA cable, which is not subject to the same copyright restrictions. This just means the Xbox 360 is just like every other HD DVD and Blu-ray player on the market, but you wouldn’t know that by reading Microsoft’s press releases yesterday.

If you ran out and bought a 1080p HDTV yesterday don’t return it just yet, you should be able to get equal picture quality to 1080p if your TV processes the incoming signal correctly, and if it supports 1080p via component you can still play upconverted and native-1080p games . We’re still waiting to hear exactly how HD DVD’s advanced audio capabilities will be handled by the 360 and oh yeah…a US price, please Microsoft?

To break it all down what you will get from the Xbox 360 after this fall’s software update:

VGA:
HD DVD – 1080p resolution and all others
DVD – Upscaled as high as 1080p resolution and all others
Games – 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

Component:
HD DVD – 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS
DVD – Upscaled to 480p maximum, limited by CSS
Games – 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the futureSource: HD Beat
